The root kerb- seeks Lidé n Stud. 50 f. in O.Ir. corbaim “besmirch, sully” and Lith. kìrba (> Ltv. ḱirba) ‘swamp, marsh, morass” and contemplates *kerb- as extension the Farbwz. ker- (see S. 583 kers-); Mũhlenbach-Endzelin II 383.
